Wenting Sun is an associate professor in the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering. Sun’s research focuses on combustion under extreme conditions. Sun has developed different facilities such as a high pressure shock tube to investigate combustion/explosion phenomenon at extreme conditions for future power generation and propulsion systems.
“I am particularly interested in understanding the mechanisms behind multiple explosions,” Sun explains. “Usually, it is not the first explosion that causes harm in a battery, but subsequent explosions. If we can identify and predict the underlying phenomena that leads to multiple combustion events, we can design interventions to help prevent catastrophic failures.”
